We take our ability to write for granted, and indeed we have become quite sloppy with it. It is worth to remind ourselves that there we was a time when very few were literate and the art of writing was available mainly to monastics. It was they, spending their lives in seclusion and contemplation, who devoted hours of the day to copying scriptures in beautiful handwriting.
Having visited Brain Allen’s studio at Golden Belt in Durham, NC, during one of AIGA Raleigh’s Dine & Draw events devoted to handlettering, I was inspired to seek proper instruction in calligraphy.
